Our Process

In more than 25 years as a financial advisor, I’ve learned that, when it comes to finances, everybody is different, but there are also many similarities. While we pay attention to everyone’s unique situation, we’ve developed a process that helps us to quickly understand where you are now and where you’d like to go.

The first step is to take a close look at what you have for income, expenses, assets, and liabilities. These are the tools we have to work with to help you pursue the financial future you want.

Step two is to discuss your goals and aspirations, for the short term, the longer term, and in retirement. Do you have shorter term savings goals, like a new house or a child’s education? Are you empty-nesters, looking to boost your savings before you retire? Are you already retired, and wondering if you can take up golf or travel without running out of money? We’ll talk about what you want your financial life to look like, at every age and stage.

We’ll have a conversation about risk. Many people think they want to take a lot of risk with their investments, until the market takes a downturn. We’ll talk about some real-world scenarios and your reaction to them and come up with a risk profile you can live with.

Using the information about where you are now and where you want to be, we’ll prepare a written financial plan to see how all these moving parts work together. This will be a work-in-progress that we can adjust as we go along. We can look at what-if scenarios when it’s time to make big decisions like changing jobs or downsizing your home.

Then we’ll design an investment portfolio, keeping in mind your goals, investment objectives and level of acceptable risk. We will review your portfolio at least quarterly, and when anything significant happens in your life or in the market. we’ll adjust the mix of assets as often as necessary to keep you on the right track.

We’ll meet at least once a year, either in person or by video conference, to discuss your plan. If you ever have a question or an issue you’d like to talk about, you can call or come in the office any time. If you ask a question I don’t have the answer to, I’ll find the answer and get back to you the same day.

A key part of your financial plan is your estate. We will make sure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes. We have a team of professionals we can recommend who are ready to assist with wills, powers of attorney, health care proxies, etc.

Your financial plan is a roadmap and a work in progress. We’ll work together to adjust your plan as the inevitable surprises and challenges come up. With regular reviews, we’ll adjust your plan to keep you on track.

Can I help you plan for the future you dream about? Give me a call today and let’s talk about it.
